Background

Most students learn to read simple chemical formulas in elementary science class, nevertheless there are some issues related to the reading of complex formulas that merit review. Specifically, this problem page reviews the issues associated with parentheses in formulas.

To remove parentheses, multipy the subscript outside the parentheses be each atom subscript inside the parenteses: Al2(SO4)3 thus translates to Al = 2, S = (1X3); O = (4X3) or Al2S3O12.

Problem

How many atoms of carbon are represented by the following formula?

C6H4(COOCH3)2
