Background

Chemical compounds are mixtures, albeit very special mixtures. The mastery of basic chemistry, therefore, requires a basic working ability with simple mixture arithmetic. Textbook Discussion: Section 3.12, page 69. See Also: Example III, page 70 and P.O. 3.4, page 72.

Problem

Qualitative analysis indicates that a chemical compound contains only the elements chromium and oxygen. A quantitative analysis indicates that this compound is 61.9 percent chromium by mass. In theory, all of the oxygen in a give sample of this compound could be isolated by appropriate chemical transformations. If these chemical transformations are carried out perfectly, what mass of  oxygen in grams would be isolated from 53.9 grams of this compound?
