This photo was taken from my kayak at a small bayside lagoon near our home. Chief Osceola died as a result of chronic malaria in 1838 while he was imprisoned in Fort Moultrie, South Carolina. Collectively, the Seminole Wars were a clash of cultures. Osceola was captured during the second of three wars. His capture is viewed by our own military as one of our greatest military disgraces because it occurred under a faux flag of truce. Ultimately, his captors gave him a full military funeral. In this photo, I envision the Scamp Sebastian looking north respectfully toward South Carolina. The inscription on Osceola’s grave at Fort Moultrie states: OSCEOLA / Patriot and Warrior / Died at Fort Moultrie / January 30th, 1838. My first job after receiving my PhD in chemistry was to make potential anti-malarial drugs for testing by the US Army. “So it goes…”
